After more than 300 hours, I know Valheim well. Though somehow, it can still surprise me. That is why I suspect I will keep playing it for years. Version 1.0 may mark the end of its journey into Early Access, but for me, it doesn’t feel like an ending. Valheim has given me hundreds of hours of stories and discoveries, and, after all this time, I’m still not ready to leave.

Boiling down Valheim into a single word isn’t easy, what with its multiple biomes, staggering amount of crafting recipes, deceptively complex and detailed base-building mechanics, heart-pounding combat, and all. But if I had to choose, I’d call it epic. I don’t just mean that to describe the game’s awesomeness, of which it has plenty; I also mean that in its saga-like length and the downright mythical feats players get to achieve on their way from simple survival to the halls of Valhalla itself. This is the quintessential hardcore survival experience—don’t ever let anything convince you otherwise.

This game is for those who like quiet progress, construction projects and atmospheric environments. If you are a survival enthusiast, it is highly recommended. It took a little too long to figure out how to join another player's server in the menus, some of you may have to google the question. But the cooperative element is wonderful. This is a fantastic couple activity and I bet some of you will start playing it with your kids. The cartoonish violence is not that scary, and building houses together is fun. I have to deduct a little for the construction stress and the storage irritation, which is too much of an everyday life and takes away time that could be spent hunting birds in the meadow or building a replica of Vikersundbakken. As usual, it is not so easy to rate the game, since people will probably be divided into those who hate the genre because it is too slow, and those who like the calm experience.

With its 1.0 release, Valheim brings a five-year Early Access journey to a fitting conclusion. While the survival game still isn’t groundbreaking in terms of graphics or technology, it treats fans of the genre to entertaining gameplay as well as experiences full of personality and memorable moments.
